The Island Ziegenwerder

According to an old story the island Ziegenwerder got its rather unusual name very easily. It is said that a goat herder with the name Gottlieb, herded his flock every spring onto the island as there was the freshest and softest grass for his goats. And every kid that was born on the island was blessed with a special animal spirit and fertility.

Until the year 2003, the island was nearly untouched nature where trees, bushes and other plants grew unhindered. The island could then only be reached via a wooden hanging bridge. But from spring to autumn 2003 the 'Europe Garden' found its way to the beauty spot. Many different green plants among even cacti, orchids and palms were planted; sun-lounges and panorama cinema came along. The overgrown paths were cleared and paved and one of the other Frankfurter was against the interference with this piece of nature.

Flora and fauna grow and thrive again without great interferences since 2004. Among the different animal species, snakes, lizards, racoons, but also pheasants love it here.

Today, the island is a popular destination for Frankfurt citizens and guests from other cities also enjoy the place. Every summer, the beer garden in the middle of the island is very popular. Concerts take place on balmy summer nights.
