The Frankfurt city Bridge - The Gate to Poland

The Frankfurt city bridge connects Frankfurt (Oder) with the Polish city of Słubice. It is situated at the B5, has a length of 251,73 metres and is 15,2 metres wide. 70% of the bridge is situated in Poland.
The first Oder bridge was built in 1253, by Johann I, Margrave of Brandenburg. It was then of supra-regional importance as it was the only viaduct over the Oder.
Next to the existing wooden bridge, a massive arched bridge was constructed in the year 1892, then the old wooden bridge was demolished in 1896. But in the 2nd World War this bridge, including the crossover railway network, was destroyed. And again a new wooden bridge was constructed.
In 1951 new construction work for a girder bridge, which is built on pillars, started. The following year it got the name 'Friendship Bridge'.

Since the year 1972 and the treaty of visa and passport free border-crossing traffic, thousands of people and vehicles use the bridge daily.
In the beginning of 2000 a totally new bridge was built due to the bad state of construction. The bridge has now three lanes and two nearly 3metre wide pedestrian ways.
